    Complete Guide to Choghadiya Muhurat

    What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya, also known as Chogadia or Chaughadia, is a traditional Hindu time system used to find auspicious timings (muhurat) for important activities. The word "Choghadiya" literally means "four ghadi" (one ghadi equals 24 minutes), representing a time period of approximately 96 minutes.

    Types of Choghadiya

There are seven types of Choghadiya periods, each governed by a different planet and having distinct qualities:

    Amrit (Nectar):

Most auspicious - ideal for all important activities, especially weddings and religious ceremonies

    Shubh (Auspicious):

Highly favorable - good for starting new ventures, business meetings, and travel

    Labh (Profit):

Excellent for financial transactions, investments, and business dealings

    Chal (Unstable):

Neutral period - can be used for routine activities but avoid important decisions

    Rog (Disease):

Inauspicious - avoid starting new work or important activities during this time

    Kaal (Death):

Most inauspicious - should be avoided for all auspicious activities

    Udveg (Anxiety):

Unfavorable - avoid important decisions and new beginnings

    Day vs Night Choghadiya

Choghadiya is calculated separately for day (sunrise to sunset) and night (sunset to next sunrise). The daytime period is divided into 8 segments starting from sunrise, while nighttime has its own 8 segments starting from sunset. The sequence and nature of these periods differ between day and night, following the movement of planetary influences.

Inauspicious Periods: Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, and Gulika Kaal

In addition to the Choghadiya system, Vedic astrology identifies three major inauspicious periods each day:

    • Rahu Kaal: The most inauspicious period, lasting approximately 90 minutes. Occurs at different times each day of the week.
    • Yamaganda: Another inauspicious period associated with the deity Yama. Also varies by day of the week.
    • Gulika Kaal: An inauspicious period ruled by Saturn's son Gulika. Timing varies daily.

Even if a Choghadiya period appears auspicious, if it overlaps with any of these veto periods, it should be avoided for important activities. Our app automatically identifies and marks all overlapping periods for your convenience.

How to Use Choghadiya for Daily Life

Check the Choghadiya muhurat for your city before planning important activities:

    • Schedule business meetings during Labh or Shubh periods for better outcomes
    • Plan travel during Char Choghadiya for safe and smooth journeys
    • Start new projects or sign important documents during Amrit or Shubh periods
    • Avoid making major decisions during Rog, Kaal, or Udveg periods
    • Always check for Rahu Kaal overlap before finalizing any muhurat
